{"id":1031,"date":"2019-01-26T00:57:26","date_gmt":"2019-01-26T00:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/?p=1031"},"modified":"2026-08-19T20:05:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T20:05:52","slug":"myanmar-oz-04","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/?p=1031","title":{"rendered":"MYANMAR &#038; OZ.  04"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About 10 minutes after we were all back on board we set off up the Yangon River and after a few minutes we branched off left into the Twante Canal.\u00a0 This\u00a0 35 km long canal was dug by the British in 1881-3.\u00a0 In 1935 it was dredged to allow larger vessels to sail from Yangon to Mandalay without going out to sea.\u00a0 We eventually found the Irrawaddy River just as we sat down to dinner at 7 pm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1041\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190125_194913-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190125_194913-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190125_194913-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190125_194913-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dinner for eight in the private dining room with Jeff &amp; Catherine and Charles &amp; Amanda and Jahn &amp; Paul from Melbourne.\u00a0 The menu, devised by Luke Nguyen, consisted of three starter dishes, one soup, two mains and a dessert.\u00a0 Very complex mixture of traditional Myanmar dishes.\u00a0 Very delicious.\u00a0 Slightly too much wine accompanying the meal.\u00a0 &#8230; and rather late finishing so, sadly, we missed part 1 of the film &#8220;The Lady&#8221;.\u00a0 Part 2 is tonight &#8211; so that&#8217;s a bit of a problem!\u00a0 It&#8217;s a supposedly fairly true account of the life of Aung San Syu Kyi.\u00a0 Maybe we can get it on catch-up!<\/p>\n<p>This morning we were woken as the anchor was lifted at first light and we steamed on upstream to Danyphyu.<\/p>\n<p>Here we were levered into Trishaws again for a trip to the local market.\u00a0 I say &#8220;levered into&#8221; because the seat width on these things is less than in BA economy &#8211; and that&#8217;s saying something!\u00a0 My solution is to add extra cushions until I&#8217;m sitting above the height of the side rails.\u00a0 Does nothing for lateral stability &#8211; but, hey, aren&#8217;t we supposed to be living on the edge?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1040\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_090551-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_090551-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_090551-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_090551-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The market sold everything we didn&#8217;t need. We need something like this to take to the school tomorrow to give to the children.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a pile of shirts on sale for 1,500 kyat &#8211; about half the price of having one shirt laundered on the ship! Tempting!<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards we were treated to a visit to a cheroot &#8220;manufacturing&#8221; operation.\u00a0 Four ladies (the youngest, just 16) rolling tobacco leaves in corn husks in a dark shed beside the road.\u00a0 Apparently they earn the equivalent of 2-3 $US a day &#8230;\u00a0 The minimum wage hereabouts.\u00a0 Here is the lead lady smoking some of the profits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1048\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_095351_crop_662x480.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"662\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_095351_crop_662x480.jpg 662w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_095351_crop_662x480-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Onwards and upwards round the back of town to the local monastery where we were due to have a brief audience with the Abbot &#8211; the senior monk in residence at 87 years old.\u00a0 There are apparently 40 monks permanently living here.\u00a0 Novices from 4-19 years, monks 20 years and up plus one big cheese.\u00a0 Apparently anyone can be a monk for a week or so.\u00a0 Indeed, virtually all Buddhist men will attend a monastery at least once in their lives.\u00a0 A week stay is quite normal.\u00a0 To be accepted you have to prove your wife or parents are happy with the plan, that you are not on the run from the authorities and that you are not bankrupt and deep in debt!\u00a0 Then there&#8217;s the small matter of house rules.\u00a0 There are some 270 of these.\u00a0 No gardening, no cooking, no this, no that&#8230;\u00a0 But at least you can leave anytime you want &#8211; allegedly!<\/p>\n<p>The buildings were beautiful but in an advanced state of dilapidation.\u00a0 The resident population had previously been much higher.\u00a0 Now a lot of the buildings were shut up and falling down.\u00a0 Sad.<\/p>\n<p>We never did get to meet the main man, but the local children who followed us everywhere were delightful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1049\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_1017560-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_1017560-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_1017560-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_1017560-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s Saturday today, so no school.\u00a0 Which does raise the interesting question about our visit to the school tomorrow.\u00a0 We could be flying home with stacks of notebooks and pencils!<\/p>\n<p>We have just passed a small boat with two men aboard.\u00a0 One driving and the other swinging a measured pole about and (presumably) testing the water depth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1050\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_172357-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_172357-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_172357-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190126_172357-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">We have been told that the water level is rather low at present and that sand banks come and go.\u00a0 Apparently we have a pilot on board each day (and by chance, we just rammed the bank to take on board just such a pilot) who is supposed to be up on the latest news from guys in small boats waving red and white poles about. It&#8217;s true to say we haven&#8217;t hit anything surprising yet &#8211; but we have been zigging and zagging backwards and forwards across the river and dodging around little sand islands.
