OZ.  23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now we were faced with an amazing array of beaches up the Shoalhaven coast.\u00a0 Yesterday, we hit the first of the &#8220;100 Challenge&#8221;, Pebbly Beach &#8211; AND they wanted to charge us for walking to the Beach.\u00a0 What a nerve!\u00a0 So we failed the Challenge at the first hurdle.\u00a0 Probably a good thing because we were never going to be able to visit all of them in two days.\u00a0 Not even close!<\/p>\n<p>We had selected Milton Country Cottages for the next two nights.\u00a0 \u00a0Not too far North.\u00a0 So we had plenty of time to swerve off the Princes Highway at every available opportunity.\u00a0 First up was Pretty Beach &#8211; but we discovered that that was still in the NP (and still subject to park fees!) so we swung back up the coast to Bawley Point.<\/p>\n<p>Places round here have some great names.\u00a0 Like Cockwhy, Kioloa, Ulladulla and Mollymook.\u00a0 And in the last of these there is a headland called Bannister Point.\u00a0 But, because Rick Stein has a restaurant here, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1558\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_155355-2016x980-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_155355-2016x980-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_155355-2016x980-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_155355-2016x980-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_155355-2016x980.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; it will be known to us as Bannistein\u00a0 &#8211; a bit like Padstow in Cornwall is now being called Padstein.<\/p>\n<p>On Mollymook Beach, we intercepted a wedding party and persuaded them not to swim here because there were no lifeguards on duty.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1561\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_172057_crop_909x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"909\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_172057_crop_909x297.jpg 909w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_172057_crop_909x297-300x98.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190302_172057_crop_909x297-768x251.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 909px) 100vw, 909px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s going to be a dry cleaning bill though!<\/p>\n<p>Well, you can&#8217;t win them all.\u00a0 Our choice of accommodation at Yatte Yettah was a bit sub-standard.\u00a0 No!\u00a0 A lot below par.\u00a0 The place needed a real good going over.\u00a0 Money spent and TLC applied.\u00a0 But Carol our host was very pleasant and helpful.\u00a0 However, she is clearly tired of the game and about to get out.\u00a0 The place is suffering badly as a result!\u00a0 (On the cruise in Myanmar, Paul challenged me to use two specific words in my blog).\u00a0 I think I&#8217;ve just done a bit of &#8220;besmirchment&#8221; there.\u00a0 So that&#8217;s one of them.\u00a0 And the other was &#8220;intractable&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211; so I&#8217;ve snuck that one in too!<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, the property is home to a colony of feather-tailed gliders.\u00a0 Tiny marsupials which have flaps of skin between front and back legs.\u00a0 When stretched these give the little mouse-like creatures the ability to glide up to 20 metres between trees.\u00a0 I spent some time with binoculars but as they live 20 metres up in the trees and are only a few cms long, I didn&#8217;t see any!\u00a0 But this is what they look like!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1564\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Feathertailedglidersm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Milton is a lovely little town about ten minutes South of base.\u00a0 A little touristy and a bit busier than anywhere we had been recently.\u00a0 This was partly because it was Saturday and a load of Sydney-siders seemed keen to share all these fabulously deserted beaches with us.\u00a0 And partly because Saturday 2nd March is the date of the Milton Show.\u00a0 We discovered this as we tried to get to Cupitt&#8217;s Winery for a coffee.\u00a0 No chance &#8211; the road was jammed with locals trying to get to see the &#8220;chooks, pigs and tractors&#8221;.\u00a0 We gave up and had a very pleasant coffee followed by a lazy lunch at the &#8220;Coast&#8221; cafe in town.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a bit mixed up on the sequence of beaches &#8211; so I was told to &#8220;stop mucking about&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, as we left Milton Cottages we were recommended to look at Washerwoman&#8217;s Beach.\u00a0 A cute, sheltered little cove.\u00a0 I say little, but everything is relative!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1565\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_095320-3024x1470-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_095320-3024x1470-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_095320-3024x1470-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_095320-3024x1470-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s Sunday and the car park is overflowing with at least ten cars &#8211; obviously we had to join them.\u00a0 The dance was called the Stingray Shuffle.\u00a0 One ray to each person and don&#8217;t stand on each others&#8217; &#8220;toes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1570\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_095908_crop_568x328.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_095908_crop_568x328.jpg 568w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_095908_crop_568x328-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They were all over the place &#8211; in ankle-deep water.\u00a0 Fabulous.\u00a0 OK these folk can share the beach with us so long as they all stay down one end with the rays!<\/p>\n<p>At this stage we didn&#8217;t know where we were going to stay.\u00a0 Glenda had shortlisted two motels about two kms apart as the crow flies, but which turned out to be about a 40 minutes apart by road.<\/p>\n<p>Our coffee stop today was at George&#8217;s Basin &#8211; we never met George but we did come face to face with his squadron of pelicans.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1573\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_120804_crop_628x451.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"628\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_120804_crop_628x451.jpg 628w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_120804_crop_628x451-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was getting significantly more busy by the time we rolled into Vincentia where we had our first view of Jervis Bay.\u00a0 And Huskisson was positively heaving.\u00a0 There was no parking space within 25 metres of town centre but heaps within 30 metres!\u00a0 Just like Devon, I don&#8217;t think!\u00a0 Lunch at the pub was quite ordinary &#8211; but the view was spectacular across the inlet and harbour area and right along Callala Beach which stretches out about three miles ahead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1574\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_143041-4608x2964-1024x659.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_143041-4608x2964-1024x659.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_143041-4608x2964-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_143041-4608x2964-768x494.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This photo was taken two minutes walk from the busy main street.\u00a0 The one thing I like about Australian crowds is that they tend to stick closely together.\u00a0 Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the epicentre of the crowd the areas are deserted!\u00a0 Again, just like Devon, not!\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s an insecurity thing.\u00a0 They just don&#8217;t know where or when they&#8217;re going to meet the next person if they wander off.<\/p>\n<p>We rocked into Culburra Beach at tea time and decided to stay at the CB Motel.\u00a0 Recently renovated, it was a lovely place to stay.\u00a0 We then went to explore the lighthouse at the Northern end of an extremely breezy beach.\u00a0 The footpath from the car park was graded as, and I quote:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;EASY &#8211; The terrain is relatively flat with few steep sections.\u00a0 The track surface is generally consolidated gravel\/stabilised soil or boardwalk.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yeah.\u00a0 Right!\u00a0 It started immediately with 57 steep and irregular steps down to the soft sand and grass section joining the terminal hill to the mainland.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1575\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_171404-3936x2940-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_171404-3936x2940-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_171404-3936x2940-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190303_171404-3936x2940-768x574.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sand turned to loose stones, then to fractured rock with interesting cracks.\u00a0 The boardwalk over the final boulder section started half way over the boulders and was reached by a single two-foot high step.\u00a0 The path then went back up another 50 or so irregular steps &#8211; but we didn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Give us a nice level walk on the beach any day!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1577\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_100007-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_100007-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_100007-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_100007-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the view from the middle of the bay looking North towards the lighthouse (which we never actually got to see!).\u00a0 The sea here is the Tasman Ocean and was pretty rough.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow we are going to walk back along Callala Beach towards Huskisson.\u00a0 The sea there is Jervis Bay.\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost totally enclosed and should be much more peaceful.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll get to that later.\u00a0 But as we are (in real time) going to meet our grandchildren tomorrow, expect delays!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>PLEASE READ THE FLOLOWNIG:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn&#8217;t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae.
