OZ.  24"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The area where we are staying is predominantly &#8220;residential with beaches&#8221;.\u00a0 Reaching Callala Beach we quickly found all the available coffee shops.\u00a0 Zero.\u00a0 So it was another lovely, long flat walk for several miles almost back to Huskisson.\u00a0 Luckily we had cool water to drink!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1588\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_105941-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_105941-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_105941-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_105941-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jervis Bay is almost totally land-locked and so is relatively very calm.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure that in a cyclone it could get quite lively &#8211; a traditional country town with traditional country town buildings.\u00a0 Like the hotel&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1590\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_145558-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_145558-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_145558-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_145558-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had been recommended to go to the Fig Tree Cafe for afternoon tea.\u00a0 As it was 2.45 pm and the cafe didn&#8217;t shut till 4.30, we decided to get out of the heat and get some light refreshment.\u00a0 However, as we arrived, they were just shutting!\u00a0 &#8220;Because of the heat&#8221; &#8211; &#8220;Because there&#8217;s no one here&#8221;.\u00a0 &#8220;We&#8217;re here!&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Well, it&#8217;s March &#8211; and we&#8217;ve decided to go home&#8221;.\u00a0 &#8220;So, we can&#8217;t get tea?&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;No!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The moral of that story is that if you are going to visit Southern NSW and want afternoon tea, it&#8217;s best not to come in March &#8211; or February for that matter &#8211; unless you come on a cool day, preferably before lunchtime!<\/p>\n<p>We had taken a bit of a risk with the accommodation for the night.\u00a0 We had taken a random punt on an AirBnB cabin on a horse stud farm just North of Berry.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1596\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_103033-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_103033-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_103033-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_103033-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1595\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_171248-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_171248-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_171248-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_171248-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1594\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_165214-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_165214-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_165214-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190304_165214-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It transpires that the place is run by Simon Cowell.\u00a0 Not the TV &#8220;personality&#8221;, but Simon Cowell AOM.\u00a0 Recognised for services to dressage training and riding work with disadvantaged youngsters.\u00a0 The Medal of the Order of Australia is one of the Australian honours first instituted in 1975 when the British Honours System was replaced.\u00a0 So, that&#8217;s the second dignitary of the trip so far.\u00a0 Penny, the Govenor of Queensland and Australian Ambassador on the boat and Simon, a be-medalled horseman in a place called Foxground.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few miles from Foxground, over the hills to the East was the most northerly beach in the 100 beach challenge.\u00a0 The Seven Mile Beach.\u00a0 We decided against that as we had to make sure we got to Sydney before nightfall.<\/p>\n<p>So, from Berry we took the mountain road over to Kangaroo Valley.\u00a0 Almost immediately we passed an enormous illuminated sign saying &#8220;MOUNTAIN ROAD CLOSED&#8221;.\u00a0 What we didn&#8217;t recognise was exactly where it was closed.\u00a0 We drove speculatively up and up into the foothills of the Great Dividing Range (also known as the Eastern Highlands).\u00a0 This is Australia&#8217;s most substantial mountain range and, indeed, at 3500 kms from end to end, is the third longest land-based range in the world.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve been alert you would know we climbed almost to the top of Mt Kosciuscko &#8211; the highest peak in the entire range.<\/p>\n<p>Kangaroo Valley is both a valley and a town.\u00a0 We got there with no sniff of a road closure.\u00a0 We found out later that the affected route was a side road up into a part of the hills that can only be accessed by that road.\u00a0 Or NOT as the case may be.\u00a0 The residents of there are appealing for Red Cross food parcels to be dropped by air!<\/p>\n<p>Kangaroo Valley is not famous for anything much really.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t see a single roo anywhere.\u00a0 It does, however, have a number of historic buildings.\u00a0 One of which has been de-banked into a cafe (of the open sort) &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1600\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_122905_crop_811x471.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"811\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_122905_crop_811x471.jpg 811w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_122905_crop_811x471-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_122905_crop_811x471-768x446.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The English, Scottish and Australian Bank!\u00a0 No room for the Welsh or Irish here!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1602\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_122744_crop_489x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_122744_crop_489x681.jpg 489w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_122744_crop_489x681-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The town has a rather out-of-place, under-clothed statue of a mermaid.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1603\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_123312_crop_479x392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_123312_crop_479x392.jpg 479w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_123312_crop_479x392-300x246.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She had a supply of hats next door &#8211; but the significance of that will only be really understood by Amelia.\u00a0 She had lost her favourite hat while on a ferry crossing the River Dart many years ago&#8230;\u00a0 It had been found by the mermaids.<\/p>\n<p>The town also has a golf course (with a closed restaurant) and a very fine suspension bridge.\u00a0 The Hampden Bridge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1601\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_125214-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_125214-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_125214-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_125214-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the last surviving suspension bridge built in colonial times in NSW.\u00a0 It was opened in 1898 and named after the then governor, Lord Hampden.<\/p>\n<p>Up over the Range &#8211; quite spectacularly steep and rugged in places like at Fitzroy Falls &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1605\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_144949-4800x2796-1024x596.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_144949-4800x2796-1024x596.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_144949-4800x2796-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190305_144949-4800x2796-768x447.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and into Bowral for a brief shopping stop.\u00a0 Then onwards and Northwards on the Hume Highway and then (as soon as possible) back down the Range to get back onto the Princes Highway into Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney seems to start in ernest about 500 miles before the airport.\u00a0 And the airport is conveniently (for us coming from the Deep South) situated well South of the CBD!\u00a0 A bit of a tangle on our approach with a couple of missed turns and some recovery loops got us to the lovely and new Felix Hotel.\u00a0 Walking distance from the domestic terminal.\u00a0 Really good and really easy.\u00a0 But why put the hotel reception on the ninth (top) floor?\u00a0 A little bit trendy?<\/p>\n<p>The following morning we went for our earlier-than-planned flight to Queensland.\u00a0 Thank you Virgin Australia for cancelling our planned flight.\u00a0 Anyway we spent a happy (stressed???) 45 minutes weighing our four bits of luggage and moving the occasional pair of underpants and the odd sandal from one case to another.<\/p>\n<p>This particular airline is extraordinarily focused on not allowing excess baggage to be loaded without substantial sums of money being extracted from the punters.\u00a0 EACH item must be (as we were told by a helpful member of staff) no more than 900 grams over-weight.\u00a0 After about 20 weighing\/re-balancings, a second shirt being worn along with a jersey and coat each around our waists, our heaviest hats in place and a book in each in our pockets, we were ready to go.\u00a0 What a palaver!\u00a0 But all our stuff was always going to be coming with us &#8211; this time Europcar &#8211; to get a car which more or less matched our booking but with the tiny modification of a raisable passenger seat so Glenda could see out the windows.\u00a0 This one took about an hour but resulted in a really nice Kia Sorrento.<\/p>\n<p>The Rooms Motel at Gatton was a lovely modern place to stay.\u00a0 And so to Stanthorpe&#8230;. see the next episode&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The following slightly modified extract from a Kimberley newsletter (kindly forwarded by Jeff) puts the temperature thing into some sort of perspective!<\/p>\n<table class=\"zoom-out\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\" border=\"0\" width=\"500\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"8\" align=\"center\" bgcolor=\"#FFFFFF\" data-zoom=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans serif; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans serif; font-size: small;\"><br \/>\nHere&#8217;s the thing:<br \/>\nThe Kimberley and Top End are currently also going through a warmer and drier than average wet season.<\/span><\/span>There hasn&#8217;t been much rain around, no major monsoonal troughs, but there has been SOME rain and most of the country is lush and green.<br \/>\nThe temperatures at times were cruel, scratching at the 50\u00b0C mark in some places, but we&#8217;ve seen it all before.<br \/>\nI wouldn&#8217;t call any of it extreme.<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans serif;
