SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sailing overnight from Vidin we arrived at the Iron Gate locks in the early hours of the Thursday morning (10 October).\u00a0 Our clocks changed this morning so we got a more leisurely breakfast than usual!<\/p>\n<p>We sailed on into the \u0110erdap Lake above the hydro-electric dam.\u00a0 The lake is over 100 kilometres long and at it&#8217;s widest is 8 kilometres wide. The maximum depth reaches 100 metres.\u00a0 \u0110erdap gorge is the largest and longest gorge in Europe.\u00a0 It opens out into four basins in succession along its length.<\/p>\n<p>We saw the Tabula Traiana again on the left hand side.\u00a0 I&#8217;m\u00a0 sure it was on the right hand side last time we saw it!\u00a0 It&#8217;s an eight metre wide stone plaque built by the Roman Emperor Trajan 1,900 years ago to mark the completion of a riverside military road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2590\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191029_081813-3991x1940-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191029_081813-3991x1940-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191029_081813-3991x1940-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191029_081813-3991x1940-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the Iron Gates dam was built downstream, the colossal plaque had to be moved up the hillside to rescue it from flooding.\u00a0 Looks like the engineers and surveyors got their levels just right!<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the river we hesitated in front of the carving of Decebalos again.\u00a0 We thought the captain was giving us more time for photos.\u00a0 However, in reality he was waiting for a tug pushing nine fully loaded barges downstream through a narrow section.\u00a0 A massive convoy.\u00a0 Bet it would take some stopping!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2591\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191029_083649-3991x1940-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191029_083649-3991x1940-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191029_083649-3991x1940-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191029_083649-3991x1940-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some 30 kilometres further upstream we docked at Donji Milanovac.\u00a0 It is in this region of the gorge that archaeologists discovered remains of what turned out to be one of the earliest human settlements in Europe.\u00a0 This was at a place called Lepinski Vir.\u00a0 Conveniently located below what was going to be the new, elevated water level.\u00a0 Major panic.\u00a0 The site was excavated, documented, mapped and then physically moved and re-built further up the bank!<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;new&#8221; deck.\u00a0 Very appealing offer.\u00a0 But, in the end, we (and about 100 other guests) declined the invitation.\u00a0 I commissioned Andras to photograph the fort on my behalf.\u00a0 Well, he gets paid to be on deck at midnight!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2600\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191028_220957-3291x2025-1024x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191028_220957-3291x2025-1024x630.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191028_220957-3291x2025-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191028_220957-3291x2025-768x473.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks Andras!<\/p>\n<p>This 14<sup>th<\/sup>-century medieval fort has impressive stone towers and castle walls that extend from the riverbank to the top of a small rocky hill.\u00a0 It is believed to have been built by the Hungarians, but much of its history remains obscure.\u00a0 Today, it is undergoing an EU-funded restoration to rebuild the wooden tower roofs and repair its stone walls.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow we are off to check out the &#8220;Frenemies&#8221;
