It was a hermit&#8217;s dwelling then a peasant&#8217;s humble abode in the 19th century.\u00a0 In 1920 Pauline monks further excavated the premises and housed a catholic chapel and monastery within.\u00a0 The Red Army captured Budapest in 1945 and in 1951 sealed off the cave with a thick layer of concrete.\u00a0 After the &#8220;revolution&#8221; the chapel was re-opened and has been an active church since then.<\/p>\n<p>Walking up the West bank we met a bunch of giant World War 1 soldiers doing soldiery things outside the southern-most buildings of the Castle Garden Bazaar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2695\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_154747-3991x1940-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_154747-3991x1940-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_154747-3991x1940-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_154747-3991x1940-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Bazaar itself is more a garden below the hilltop palaces and castle&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2696\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191105_131457-3991x1940-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191105_131457-3991x1940-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191105_131457-3991x1940-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191105_131457-3991x1940-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After lunch &#8211; yes, food went on to the bitter end &#8211; we walked past the iconic covered market.\u00a0 Down the pedestrianised street towards the Sofitel Hotel and past another modest statue&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2698\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_154921-3531x2332-1024x676.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_154921-3531x2332-1024x676.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_154921-3531x2332-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_154921-3531x2332-768x507.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mih\u00e1ly V\u00f6r\u00f6smarty in V\u00f6r\u00f6smarty Square.\u00a0 He was a (locally famous) Hungarian poet and dramatist.\u00a0 Budapestrians do love their memorials!\u00a0 They are everywhere.\u00a0 They have them for fun. Maybe they make the city more friendly.\u00a0 Each is telling stories of the people and the history of the place.\u00a0 Many of them have a shiny part because you have to rub the corner of a statue to bring good luck!<\/p>\n<p>As we approached the Sofitel we were passed by a swooping convoy of nine black SUVs with blue flashing lights.\u00a0 \u00a0They parked right in front of\u00a0&#8220;our&#8221; hotel and out flooded dozens of bodyguards surrounding their principals.\u00a0 We couldn&#8217;t get anywhere near the place for ten minutes.\u00a0 Later a small entourage emerged for a walk along the river bank.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2699\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_155104-2352x1762-1024x767.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_155104-2352x1762-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_155104-2352x1762-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_155104-2352x1762-768x575.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Actually, the only reason these guys are staying at &#8220;our&#8221; Sofitel is that the Marriott was fully booked by an international conference of scrap metal merchants!<\/p>\n<p>Now, the last bit of excitement we had involved trams.\u00a0 They are free to over 65 year olds.\u00a0 Maybe only 65 year old members of the EU!\u00a0 They have priority over cars, obviously.\u00a0 But today there are massive queues at the tram stops but no trams!\u00a0 There&#8217;s always some bright sparks who think they can outrun a tram.\u00a0 Usually they do&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2700\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_155246-2966x1252-1024x432.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_155246-2966x1252-1024x432.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_155246-2966x1252-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20191103_155246-2966x1252-768x324.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>.. but not always!\u00a0 This one got squished.\u00a0 This jammed the system and left us oldies to walk home!<\/p>\n<p>So, there you have it &#8211; our cruise to the Black Sea &#8211; all from the horse&#8217;s mouth!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now here&#8217;s where we&#8217;ve been&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2702\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Daube-crop-MOD2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"998\" height=\"731\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Daube-crop-MOD2.jpg 998w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Daube-crop-MOD2-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Daube-crop-MOD2-768x563.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 998px) 100vw, 998px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the trip we have negotiated just four locks (two each way), we&#8217;ve visited five countries\u00a0 (Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania) and got right to the border of the Ukraine.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve been paraded in front of Serbian border guards at Moh\u00e1cs &#8211; twice &#8211; both times in the dead of night!\u00a0 We think it&#8217;s something to do with Brexit &#8211; or the lack of&#8230;\u00a0 However, leaving the EU on board the MS Robert Burns happened smoothly &#8211; both times.\u00a0 Not a Remoaner in sight!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve visited three capital cities, one of them twice.\u00a0 From the outskirts of Budapest we passed under just 16 road bridges each way.\u00a0 On average one every 100 kms.\u00a0 And three of them were at the city of Novi Sad (pronounced Novey Saad).\u00a0 The longest distance between bridges was exactly 300 kms.\u00a0 If you were driving, it would pay not to miss your bridge &#8211; or, perhaps, to own a boat!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve spent a total of almost exactly 24 hours on buses looking for attractions to visit and well over half of that being inundated with facts and a not a few political statements.\u00a0 Our guides have without exception been well informed, but some were easier to listen to than others.\u00a0 I think Ms. Strident and our German refugee from Vukovar were the best communicators.\u00a0 Maybe someone should have a quiet word with the guides and tell them that, at an average age of &#8211; well let&#8217;s just say &#8220;over 60&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211; their audience need to forget two facts just to store one new one!!!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve seen more dilapidated factories and rural housing than you can shake a stick at.\u00a0 There have been some big palaces and some fabulous cathedrals and churches.\u00a0 \u00a0We now know that the walls of icons are known as iconostases not iconostages!\u00a0 We&#8217;ve seen tiny churches carved into cliffs and others which have to be open 18 hours a day to satisfy the pilgrims.\u00a0 Luckily for the priest for just one day a year!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve seen evidence of some of the oldest human settlements on the planet and we&#8217;ve seen a massive rock carving of a long dead king completed just a decade or two ago!<\/p>\n<p>There have been lots of forts, some big and impregnable &#8211; others more &#8220;pregnable&#8221; and well damaged.\u00a0 There have been Roman remains and lots of evidence of very recent wars.<\/p>\n<p>Our fellow passengers have, without exception, been absolutely punctual &#8211; the ship and buses have never had to wait for stragglers.\u00a0 No one has got lost and apart from a bit of a cold bug circulating all the passengers remained healthy.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve generally had a really good introduction to life in countries from behind &#8220;the iron Curtain&#8221; struggling to recover from &#8220;difficult&#8221; times under communist regimes.\u00a0 The local guides have had so many different perspectives on the situation.\u00a0 They have given us a lot to think about!<\/p>\n<p>A really interesting experience.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you MS Robert Burns and all his\/her crew!<\/p>\n<p>Thank you Riviera.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bad news and good!\u00a0 Sadly, we leave the ship today &#8211;
