{"id":487,"date":"2018-10-10T20:26:30","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T20:26:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/?p=487"},"modified":"2026-08-18T19:50:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T19:50:01","slug":"euro-travellers-2018-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/?p=487","title":{"rendered":"EURO-TRAVELLERS 2018.  12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>12\u00a0 BACK TO SPAIN AND ON TO FRANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The only problem with driving across Spain in a diagonally NE direction is the lack of campsites.\u00a0 Realistically, for huge sections of the trip there were no camp grounds because there were no towns or villages.\u00a0 The country is very empty &#8211; but the roads are really good (provided you can get into the outside lane &#8211; see earlier comments).\u00a0 Engage cruise control at 60 mph and sit back watching for fast moving traffic approaching from the rear in the bumpy inside lane&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But where are we going? The plans kept changing but we ended up sticking with our original plan and stopped at a poorly-reviewed site at Castrojeriz.\u00a0 (By &#8220;poorly-reviewed&#8221; I mean &#8220;in receipt of poor reviews&#8221;!).\u00a0 Camping Camino de Santiago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"344\" class=\"wp-image-488\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-97.jpeg\" alt=\"D:\\JTUserData\\Documents\\PICTURES\\My new phone 2\\2018\\Spain + resized\\20180625_075122-1305x734.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-97.jpeg 612w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-97-300x169.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">The view from our pitch<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The site had, in fact, been well-reviewed.\u00a0 It lived well down to its reputation with weird plumbing in the showers, electric hook-ups with reverse polarity as well as lacking a proper earth connection!\u00a0 The pitches were mighty cramped too.\u00a0 But enough of that&#8230; the view was good!<\/p>\n<p>We had failed with our plan to visit Santiago by car and caravan but now another brilliant opportunity presented itself.\u00a0 The Camino &#8211; t<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">he path &#8211; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">Castrojeriz<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So we did.\u00a0 From the caravan through the village following the signs we boldly went.\u00a0 Captain Kirk would have been proud.\u00a0 We did stop for an hour for supper in a small restaurant and then again for another half an hour drinking beer on a bar terrace with a lovely outlook.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard work this long distance walking and no opportunity for taking on food and drink should be missed.\u00a0 We did manage about 1.5 kms out and the same back home before it got dark.\u00a0 We decided to leave the remaining 420 or so kms for another day!\u00a0 Actually, on second thoughts, we&#8217;ll leave it for other people to do!\u00a0 One has to question the sanity of the &#8220;pilgrims&#8221; walking whole route in 30+ degrees.\u00a0 However, the village was really quite quaint with an odd mix of tumble-down properties and renovated places.\u00a0 Really glad we stopped by &#8211; but one night&#8217;s enough for us.<\/p>\n<p>Day two of the trek towards Roscoff in Brittany &#8211; Monday 25 June.\u00a0 A good early start.\u00a0 Not in the Dutch sense of early &#8211; with wheels turning at 07.30.\u00a0 But early for us &#8211; before 10 am anyway.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to say anything much about today.\u00a0 Very easy for the driver &#8211; nightmare for the navigator-cum-site selecter.\u00a0 We tried two places near Zarautz on the north coast near San Sebasti\u00e1n.\u00a0 One over-crowded place high in the hills in an eco-park with miniscule pitches a few of which had absolutely magnificent views.\u00a0 We would get a view by moving from the centre to an edge pitch on the Tuesday.\u00a0 No thanks.\u00a0 The other site was full of unaccompanied Spanish teenagers in post-examination, party mode.\u00a0 Literally hundreds of the blighters.\u00a0 Definitely no thank you!!!<\/p>\n<p>So we drove onwards into France.\u00a0 Up the A63 which is still under construction and full of lorries heading out of Spain and Portugal.\u00a0 We stopped on the outskirts of Dax.\u00a0 Booked a birthday visit to the Auberge Ferme Lesca but Glenda hurt her back so we did lunch instead at Pouillon.\u00a0 At a little place interestingly named L&#8217;Auberge de Pas de Vent. Sounds as if there would be beans on the menu &#8211; but there weren&#8217;t!\u00a0 Very friendly staff.\u00a0 Lovely local-style meal.\u00a0 Highly recommendable.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">In the back room of the auberge there was a court for the playing of an ancient game of skittles &#8211; &#8220;Les quilles de 9).\u00a0 Looked really odd and clearly pre-dates Wikipedia as it has almost no record of the game although it does list dozens of variants of Basque skittles!\u00a0 I guess this might be one of them.\u00a0 The &#8220;boule&#8221; weighs in at an impressive 6 kg and is lobbed at the &#8220;quilles&#8221; each almost a metre tall with a bulbous swelling half way up.\u00a0 Apparently the aim is to knock over skittles in one of 12 different combinations.\u00a0 Odd, these Basque types!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-494\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-103.jpeg\" alt=\"D:\\JTUserData\\Documents\\PICTURES\\My new phone 2\\2018\\Spain + resized\\20180626_135838-734x1305.jpg\" width=\"164\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-103.jpeg 189w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-103-169x300.jpeg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-495\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-104.jpeg\" alt=\"D:\\JTUserData\\Documents\\PICTURES\\My new phone 2\\2018\\Spain + resized\\20180626_141636-1084x796.jpg\" width=\"394\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-104.jpeg 570w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-104-300x220.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bougie at Pouillon and the back room cum skittles court.<\/p>\n<p>We eventually made the duck farm (Ferme Lesca) for a birthday lunch on the following day.\u00a0 More candles.\u00a0 Good too but seemed a bit pricey after all our meals in Iberia!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"369\" height=\"521\" class=\"wp-image-496\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-105.jpeg\" alt=\"D:\\JTUserData\\Documents\\PICTURES\\My new phone 2\\2018\\Spain + resized\\20180627_135649(0)_crop_459x649.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-105.jpeg 369w, https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/d-jtuserdata-documents-pictures-my-new-phone-2-20-105-212x300.jpeg 212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 369px) 100vw, 369px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On our first evening, we had a delicious meal in the site restaurant with a couple of fellow Brits from Hampshire (Phil and Janet).\u00a0 We spent long periods in the lovely warm pool with &#8220;Mark-but-you-can-call-me-Badger&#8221; and &#8220;Alicia-from-Galicia&#8221; (Spanish and 20 or more years the younger!).
