January).\u00a0 We had moored alongside an area of riverside which was being actively re-developed.\u00a0 Effectively,\u00a0 we were parked adjacent to a ship building yard!<\/p>\n<p>We were bussed to Tam Coc near Nihn Bihn, where we were taken for a ride in little rowing boats powered by foot-rowing drivers.\u00a0 This lady was our personal &#8220;motor&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well, that was a bit of excitement!\u00a0 Nobody fell in and nobody bashed their head in the caves!<\/p>\n<p>The Ngo Dong River winds through limestone karst mountains, forming the three natural water caves (Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba).\u00a0 (And that appears to translate as Main cave, cave two and cave three!)\u00a0 (Imaginative!)<\/p>\n<p>Later that day, a trip to Phat Diem revealed &#8230; Oh no &#8230; is that yet another temple?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7045\" src=\"https:\/\/tappstravels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260110_1553432-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" not!\u00a0 It&#8217;s a catholic church &#8211; a cathedral even!\u00a0 A cathedral fronted by a very temple-like building.<\/p>\n<p>Built entirely of stone and ironwood, the cathedral took 24 years to complete.\u00a0 It is known as the &#8220;Stone Church&#8221; or the &#8220;Catholic Capital of Vietnam&#8221;.\u00a0 It is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>Inaugurated in 1891, the cathedral is 74m long, 21m wide, and 15m high &#8211; a huge space.\u00a0 Inside, there are six rows of solid ironwood columns (48 columns in total), with the two central rows reaching 11m in height and 2.35m in diameter, each column weighing approximately 10 tons.\u00a0 These massive wooden pillars were transported and installed using the rudimentary technology available at the time &#8230; and, presumably, a lot of people-power!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7047\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On either side of the main church are four smaller churches said to have &#8220;harmonious architecture&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The cathedral was bombed in 1972, when it&#8217;s west wall, a convent and two schools located on the site were damaged.\u00a0 However, restoration has removed all traces of this damage.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, catholicism is a major religion in this region.\u00a0 They probably need to pray a lot to make sure they get the correct internet connection!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" of us.\u00a0 By far the longest trip between excursions.\u00a0 The captain made some miles that evening, passing under the illuminated Thi\u00ean Trur\u00f2ng Bridge on the S\u00f4ng Nam \u00d0inh water from tomorrow as we have no de-salination plant on board.\u00a0 (And the water of Halong Bay is salty!)<\/p>\n<p>We also saw the laundry, crew quarters, storage areas and waste water treatment plant as well as the twin propulsion engines (noisy) and the twin electrical generators.\u00a0 The last of these are run alternately to stop them overheating.\u00a0 All very &#8220;compact&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>During the tour of the boat, we had apparently quietly snuck onto the S\u00f4ng Kihn Mon River, to be followed by the Thai Binh River.\u00a0 This part of the waterways of the delta is definitely NOT pretty.\u00a0 There&#8217;s lots of evidence of coal mining and transport.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium associated loss of rice paddies.\u00a0 And lots of garbage everywhere.\u00a0 \u00a0Not at all pretty.\u00a0 No wonder the captain had us confined to the lower decks!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m now hopelessly lost in the delta, but we are approaching the north side of Haiphong.\u00a0 So that&#8217;s good news!\u00a0 If we had stayed on the main waterways we could have been at sea south of Haiphong hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p>However, we are scheduled to visit Than Ha village to watch a performance of water puppets.\u00a0 This building in a pond is the location.\u00a0 The band and singers are hidden on the main floor, while the puppeteers and assistants are underneath wearing long waders.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7060\" their passengers, but all locals are welcome.\u00a0 Certainly the young children of the village were enjoying the show with enthusiasm.\u00a0 I guess this is a regular event taking place twice every 22 days.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also guessing that some of the kids come to each show!\u00a0 The show reflects all aspects of village life.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone their water Buffalo and fishing for very lively fish.\u00a0 The buffalo appeared to get into a fight at one point!\u00a0 All the action is controlled from below water level by the puppeteers behind the screen.\u00a0 From time to time water dragons appeared, but as the songs and narration was all in Vietnamese, we were a little unsure of the plot!\u00a0 But we did get a close up demo of one of
