OBERGURGL – DEC 2019 – Part 1

This is going to be more of a collection of photos of our trip to Austria than a travel blog.

Having had our air transport to our full family holiday to France over New Year cancelled when Thomas Cook went toes up – we have also had our flights from Heathrow to Innsbruck cancelled by BA!  Is it something we said?  However, we soon got replacement flights – but from Gatwick – for our convenience.

We met up with Robin, Linda, Jack and Phroggy at Crawley.  We left the car at the hotel and taxied to the airport.

Our flight was uneventful but very fast.

Arriving into Innsbruck…

Our transfer was waiting for us for 90 minute drive into the mountains.

The Hotel Alpina Deluxe is a super place with instant access to the snow.

The view from our room…

Off to the ski hire place for fitting.  Have a ski…

And off for a bit of snow!

With our hotel behind.

Grandma with Jack – and Phroggy below all in red.

Into ski-school and Jack’s away…

As is Phroggy…

Faster and faster…

And soon they were winning medals!

Late one evening two of us went for a walk in the woods in two metres of soft snow.  Luckily, with snow-shoes!

… but we declined the offer of crossing the 50 metre deep ravine on this bridge!

On the Wednesday it dawned a superbly clear day – just right for a trip up the gondola lift to Hohe Mut Alm at 2670 metres.

The view is a 360 degree panorama of peaks over 3000 m and about 20 glaciers – except these are not visible in the snow.

A great place for a bar/restaurant…

This is the first remote selfie we took with my new bluetooth remote trigger.  The only one, actually…

The air was calm and crystal-clear.

There was a great view down the Gurgl valley, although Obergurgl itself is out of sight…

After exploring the summit some more…

… we had to visit the restaurant for some lunch, a beer and a sit down.

Then it was time for some of us to go back to “work” on the lower ski slopes.

Nice “pizza” by the way!  We stopped off at the Mittel Station on the way down but the restaurant place was difficult to access as pedestrians as it was 50 metres UP the slope from the gondola stop.  And there were high speed skiers coming down the access route!  At speed!  Still we got a great view of the snow canon party.

In the evening the young skiers brushed up nicely…

But there was a fair bit of photo-bombing going on!

Well, there are more photos than I thought so there’s going to have to be a part 2 to follow!

No. Skiing to risky at our age! Did go walking with snow-shoes (and with just crampons). Great fun watching the family. Going to France for a week with all the family at New Year!

Looks like a great time being enjoyed by everyone, and lovely sunny weather. It actually got to 41°C here in Brisbane yesterday, so about 50° difference in temperature to where you are!!🥵☃️

Fabulous photos and some promising young skiers! The snow looks amazing ready for our visit on 12th Jan!
Some familiar sights there too. The mountains are beckoning! X
